What a great weekend!

Wow! What a fun-jam-packed weekend it was here in Omaha. Here's how the weekend played out:

Thursday night: My wife and I went to the book launch of Ted Kooser's new book, Lights on a Ground of Darkness. If you don't know, Mr. Kooser is a big shot in the poetry world, Poet Laureate a few years back. I have read many of his poems and admire the simpleness of his verse with a deepness of philosophy that makes you want to pause and think for a while after you've finished the poem. I was really surprised as to how small and fragile he was. He read a few poems and read a few excerpts from his book, which I bought and got autographed, but more than anything, he answered questions from the audience which was really helpful for an aspiring writer. As he was signing my book, I told him I would like to hold a poetry workshop based on his "Poetry Home Repair Manual" for the kids at Boys Town. I really think a lot of my students would like this as many of them have had a difficult upbringing and I'm sure they write poetry to express their emotions. He wished me luck with that project and I thanked him.

Friday night: Nights with a bottle of wine at the couch and a movie are always good nights, except the movie was pretty bad, The Line, don't rent it, unless there is absolutely nothing else, even then, maybe even watch TV instead. Though, I will give props to Blockbuster for having a Latino Heritage section during this month, this is where we found that movie and also a movie called, Máncora, which was a really good movie.

Saturday: The day started out with me waking up at 6:30 and begin to work on my presentation for this coming Tuesday on Chicano Literature. I think I should be fully prepared or at least 90% ready. I plan to give the presentation to my students at Boys Town.

At 1pm, my wife and I headed downtown for participate in the Omaha Lit Fest. There was a panel on how to be a writer in economic hardship, such as the one we are in. It was really informative, mainly information on how to use blogs to further your writing style, promote yourself and build an audience. But probably the most I got from this panel was being able to meet two Latina writers, Joy Castro and Amelia Maria de la Luz Montes. I knew that both of these writer would be there and I wanted to introduce myself as they are successful writers here in Nebraska. I still haven't read any of their books, but I have already put them on my MUST READ list. I was very excited to know that Joy Castro would like to talk at Boys Town some time in the future about the struggles youth can have. I know that her book, Truth, deals with adolescent struggles. I really hope I can coordinate with her and the school to get her to talk with our students.

After the Lit Fest, we headed for Old Chicago with some friends to see the Husker's play. Sad day for the Husker's, they lead the whole game, only to loose it in the last minutes. Oh well, maybe next time.

It seemed to be a great day, with still the Creighton Soccer game to attend and a Fashion Show later that night, but oh how things changed. My car got towed! I was so mad at myself. When I arrived at the Lit Fest I knew that it was a little risky to park the car in that spot, but I figured I would be ok for an hour and I could move it after the panel was done. Nope I completely forgot and so my poor car was towed. $180 to get it back that night. Damn, I was so mad at myself. Well, it was a lesson learned.

Sunday morning: 10k race. Did I finish? You betcha! Am I hurting? Of course! Did my wife beat me in the race? Well, we all knew that she would, so no surprise. I am so proud of her, because she ran the whole 6 miles without stopping! You go girl! So it was overall a great weekend, Omaha needs to have more weekends like this, or we need to find out about more of these events!

Serena Williams

Unfortunately for Serena Williams, despite winning 11 Grand Slams, she will be remembered by some, as the angry tennis player that yelled at a line judge. I have never been a big fan of Serena, but it's not to say that I don't admire what her and her sister have accomplished. I still remember reading the article from Tennis Magazine when I was a young teenager about two young African-American girls from Compton with a crazy dad, predicted to dominate the tennis world in the coming years. That is exactly what they have done. Dominate.

The chain of events of what happened at this U.S Open sparked some conversation at the tennis clinics I teach on Sunday afternoon. I was so surprised as to how in awe people were by the way that Serena had reacted. Do I agree with the way she handled the situation? No of course not, but at the same time I'm not going to crucify her cussing out a line judge. Why do I think people are making this such a big deal: young, single, black, talented female.

Nobody gets on John McEnore's ass about the thousands of tantrums he's thrown in his two decade career. By the way he still does them. If fact, he gets paid to act like an asshole on the court. Go to any Senior Tour event and if Johnny Mac is playing, I guarantee you he is going to throw a fit. Why? Because that is what people want to see.

How about Jennifer Capriati? Girl gets stoned, arrested and leave the tennis tour. How did the media react...slap on the wrist. By the way, have you seen the on court tantrums she's had on the court? If not, YouTube them, not too nice.

I really wish the media would take it easy on Serena. What she did and said, was out of character, but do you ban someone from Grand Slam events because of it. I don't know. If that is the case, then we should see less and less tennis players. How could Serena not get mad about that call. It was ridiculous with ridiculous timing and to top it off, cameras have proven that she DIDN'T even foot fault.

For the first time in my life, I'm rooting for Serena on this one, give the girl a break (no pun intented).

Notes

Happy September! Wow I can't believe September is already here and nearly half way through it.

Some pretty exciting things coming up. First is the Omaha Lit Fest which will be held Sept. 17-19. The one event that I am really looking forward to is seeing and hearing Ted Kooser speak Sept 17th. I am also looking forward to networking with some other writers in the Omaha community. I know there is this great community that is willing to share their thought/ideas/work with other, I just haven't found them yet. I hope attending some of the events will help me make new friends in the poetry world.

The follow day after the Lit Fest, my wife and I have signed up to do a 10k run/walk. I think I'm liking the right side of the slash a little better, since I'm not in shape to run 10k's. Who is? Well I guess my brother Cayo, but he is half human, half awesome so that doesn't count. Erin (my wife) did buy me some great running shoes to help motivate me and it has worked. I have been running a little more, but I just find it so hard to runn for a long period of time, unless I'm chasing a ball. Anyways I think it should be fun, I plan on bringing my iPod in case the running part gets a little to hard.

Sept 22, big day for Senor Bravo. I will be giving a speech/presentation at the Sarpy Center at one of the Metro CC locations. This presentation is in promotion of Hispanic Heritage Month and the topic will be "Code-Switching and Spanglish" in Chicano Literature. I'm very excited about this topic, because I think it is a very interesting topic that we will continue see be used among Latino/Chicano writers in the years to come. I have begun the research and I think I have a pretty good grasp about what I'll be covering, so this weekend I'm going to concentrate on the powerpoint...I hate making powerpoints!

Very excited about my lastest poetry purchase: My Kill Adore Him by Paul Martinez Pompa. I've been waiting patiently for this book to come out and now I have ravished through the book, completely indulged with poetic bliss. Damn this guy is good. Bold, blunt and beautiful. I can't say that I love every poem, but the ones that I do love, I REALLY love. Some of my favorite titles are:
-Pulling Tongue
-Flirting
-Amputee Etcetera
-Commercial Break
-Exclamation Point

If you really enjoy poetry, and enjoy Latinos, this is the book for you. Totally recommend it, plus the cover design is pretty sweet (pun intended).

Still waiting to hear back from WriteLife about The Traveler. Still working on The Papaya Plot. Still working on revising Crossing Back, The Other Guey. Got some great help today from a good friend. Had another friend call and said they really liked it.

Bought my ticket to Tucson! Yay! Going to be there Nov. 6-8. I'm really excited to see my family and hang out at the house, eat some good food, visit old friends and find new inspiration.
